Insert Blank Lines between Bullets

When you are creating a bulleted list, sometimes you want more space between the items. For example, instead of:

  • apple
  • banana
  • carrot

You want:

  • apple

  • banana

  • carrot

Unfortunately, if you try to double-space between the items by pressing the Enter key twice, Word thinks you want to insert an additional item into your list and you end up with something looking like:

  • apple
  •
  • banana
  •
  • carrot

To solve this problem, use Shift+Enter followed by Enter, rather than pressing Enter twice. Holding down the Shift key while you press Enter creates a line break in the text, which provides the space you are looking for without inserting a new bullet.

This technique works equally well on numbered lists.

First Choice/Your Choice packs tips like these into their computer training programs throughout the Chicago area. For timely assistance with individual questions, the Help, I'm Stuck application support program is available nationwide.
